Look Good This Winter: Four Simple Ways To Feel Great

Without a doubt, it’s harder to look good over the winter than over the summer. Living in Canada, seasons happen every year and one has to learn how to cope with the changes. Weather can go from being extremely hot to wearing a snowboarding jacket as an alternate winter jacket. Some days you’ll get a week of a downpour of rain and other weeks you’ll have to deal with the temperature dropping in its negatives. Here are some tips to help you look good and feel great through the coldest, darkest months of the year.

Keep Up With Your Skincare Routine

The cold winter winds are terrible for your skin. You might find that you end up with chapped lip, flushed cheeks and a frozen nose when you get inside after being out in the cold. It’s also easy to end up with sore cracked knuckles if you haven’t been wearing gloves. Make sure that you moisturize regularly – use a moisturizer with a high SPF under your makeup and remember to put night cream on before you go to bed at night.

One of my favourite things to do (at least once a week) is to apply a face mask before bed. I personally like alternating my face mask products and I was lucky enough to be able to try out Rodan + Fields products for a mini facial. I used the Micro-Dermabrasion Paste which helps to gently exfoliate your skin. Helps removes dull and dead skin cells and improves skin texture, radiance and tone. You’ll also want to drink plenty of water and keep reapplying Chapstick to your lips. I personally have a horrible habit of picking my dry lips so I often use a little of Vaseline cocoa butter before bed to keep it hydrated while I sleep. If you’re still desperate to keep wearing your favourite matte lipsticks, ensure that you use a sugar scrub first to get rid of any dry skin, apply a little bit of Chapstick and then apply your favourite matte lipstick. My personal favourite lip scrub is Bubblegum from Lush. I’ll be honest, sometimes it’s hard not to lick it off my lips as it taste amazingly great.

Change Your Makeup Colors

You need to remember that your skin tone may have changed since the summer now you’re spending less time outside in the sun. If you need to, switch your foundation and concealer for lighter shades. The dewy glow was probably the most fashionable look this summer and you can continue that into the winter. However, use cooler tones – think silver rather than gold. Finally, switch your summer lipsticks with pink and orange undertones for darker berry hues. As most of you already know, my favourite make-up line is NYX. They have amazing lines for all skin tones as well has colors year around. I personally love their lipstick line as I’ve never had an issue with it staying on my lips like most drugstore products do. With the the same pigmentation as expensive quality brands but the cheapness of a drugstore price, you can’t go wrong. 

Keep Your Hair In Top Condition

It’s easy to let your hair become dry and distressed over the winter. Make sure you keep it moisturized – heated homes and workplaces can dry your hair out, and this can cause it to look frazzled. Deep conditioning your hair once a week will help to maintain elasticity and stop it breaking, and using a satin pillowcase will also help you keep it looking smooth and sleek. Try using hair oils on the ends of your hair – although keep them away from the roots or it might start looking greasy! As you know from my previous post about keeping your hair vibrant for months on end, you’ll know how much I often I use both dry shampoo and Argan/Morocco oil hair protectant products.

Along with supplying my face with a mask, I also love to include my hair. Try to avoid chemicals and too many heat treatments on your hair – instead wear it in styles like buns, French twists and ponytails, and wear hats to keep it protected. Think Elysian has a great post on how to create a classy half updo look. One of my favourite looks is the half bun hairdo that author of Raising Jay and Abel seem to have perfected. 

However, if you do end up using heat protectant products I would suggest to use something that is Argan/Morocco oil based. Leave in hair treatments with Argan/Morocco oil (HSI Professional also has this as part of  their subscription box) contains the essential nutrients to keep your hair healthy and smooth. The best part is that it is super light and doesn’t build up residue or make your hair feel greasy. I mainly use it at the tips of my locks versus the roots. If you’re the type who wants to use added hair like wigs and weaves, make sure you use virgin hair for extra shine. 

Stay Fit And Healthy

It’s so easy to let yourself get out of shape during the winter. Trust me, even I’m a victim of this. No one wants to go for a run if the sidewalks are thick with ice and snow! You can’t bike to work if there’s heavy rain or the roads are slippery. No one wants to go to the gym after work if the skies are pitch black. But it’s important that you stay fit and healthy this time of year – it’s easy to get blue when it’s dark and cold outside and exercise releases endorphins, happy hormones, in your body.

Try to make exercise as fun as possible by going to a fitness class with a friend. Team sports can also be fun if you’re not shy around new people. You could also do aerobics and yoga videos in the warmth and comfort of your own home. My favourite wii games are the ones that involve having to work up a sweat by dancing. Mixing video games and exercise while being in the comfort of your own home is a great alternative, don’t you think?

    These are awesome tips Glenny. I’m so bad at taking care of my skin (like sleep with mascara on type of bad!) I have to really get a good skin routine especially in the winter! And cold is the only thing I don’t miss about Canada, otherwise I loved living in Toronto for 15 months! And my daughter was born there 🙂 (sorry totally off topic, I just miss Canada lol)
