A lot of people struggle when it comes to being their own person. Even I do. After all, it’s so easy to be led astray by other people and by trends. And you can easily end up becoming a carbon copy of your friends or family. But to be truly happy, you need to open up and be yourself. After all, we all have traits and skills that make us unique.
If you feel like you don’t know who you are, here is everything you need to know about discovering the real you.
Consider when you are happiest
When it comes to finding the real you, it can be a challenge to know where to start. You might be hiding your true feelings deep down. But one good way to begin discovering the real you is by working out when you are happiest. Think back over the last year or even the years before and consider when exactly was you content.
Was it when you were doing a particular activity? Or being around certain people in your day to day life? Surrounding yourself with things that make you happy emits more positive energy back into you. For me, I knew traveling was one of my sources of happiness. But I couldn’t travel everyday even if I wanted to. That’s where writing came into play. Listening to music. Playing video games. Being around bodies of water, and if I can’t be physically near it I stimulate my senses by listening to nature sounds where water is involved. As this feature reveals, when you are at your happiest, you will be filled with energy and feel like you are truly alive.
Think about your own personal skills
It can be hard to believe that we have any unique skills. In fact, we are likely to feel jealous over our friend’s own skills. But we bet there are things you are great at that your friends will be envious about. And discovering these particular skills is an excellent way to find out why you stand out from the crowd. Therefore, take into consideration of your own skills and focus on them. For the longest time, I didn’t understand why I couldn’t draw like a manga artist or why I couldn’t do certain things that my friends can easily do like bargin a good deal. But I see now, my specialty with graphic design and understanding technology with ease is a skill that most of my friends wish they had. Whatever it is, take pride in it and show it off.

Find your purpose
When you are trying to discover the real you, you should try and find a purpose for your life. It’s easy to feel worthless and wonder what the point is of your life. But just like everyone, there’s always a real purpose to your life.
If you have a job that involves caring, you are likely making a huge impact on people’s lives. Or if you have a child, you are making a huge difference to their life. Working out what a difference you make to someone’s life, whether it’s a colleague, a parent, or a friend, can help you to discover who you are.
Identify your strengths and weaknesses
It can always be a challenge to think of your own strengths and weaknesses. But it’s one good way to discover the real you. Write a list of things you are good at and what you’re poor at. You can also ask colleagues and friends who will help you to compile a list.
You will be surprised that the strengths will outweigh the weaknesses. As they always have. And once you have a list of strengths, it can build you up and help you to be more aware of yourself!
At the end of the day, you’ll always be learning and rediscovering yourself. Sometimes it can take a while for you to really figure out what your true passions are but once you get to that point, you’d be surprised at how far you’ve come and what you’ve accomplished.
